Final Exam: Planned procedure
(1) Open book, open notes, open internet. Do it on your own; collaboration is cheating.
(2) “Take-home” component, acoustic phonetics lab exam, weight about 15% of final
-- expected time needed = 2-4 hours; time allowed = 5 days
-- the take-home exam and its associated audio files were posted on the class website “Final Exam” after noon on Saturday 2 May; e-mail your solution to me no later than 10 p.m. Wednesday 6 May. (The time for this component is extended so as not to overlap with the deadline for “in-class” component.)
(3) “In-class” component, all topics including acoustic phonetics, weight about 85% of final.
-- Given at officially scheduled time = starting Wednesday 6 May, 1 pm, with extended time = 1 pm to 5 pm
-- Expected time needed = 2 hours; time allowed = 4 hours (change from previous 3 hours)
I will e-mail the exam to the class about 1 pm, your e-mail return must be time stamped by four hours after the time on my e-mail. The exam will be in editable .docx format, so you can copy and paste language data conveniently. (Time of day can be adjusted to fit individual schedules – e-mail me well in advance if you need adjustment -- Two students needed time adjustments. )
If the “in-class” component of the final exam includes audio files (for phonetic transcription, for example), those will be posted on the web site rather than attached to the e-mailed exam. A .pdf version of the final exam will be posted on the website in addition to the editable .docx that will be attached to the e-mail.
This page will include the sample final exam, the sample lab exam, the final exam, the lab exam, and the related audio files. The exams will be posted as .pdf files and also as .docx files, so you will have access to the data without having to retype the phonetics.
